FROM SCRIPT TO ART, EXAMPLE 1

One of the things I thought might be of interest every now and then is to compare how something that is written comes to life when in art. In this particular example, I will show a little bit of Ten Beautiful Assassins you have not seen (and may never do) – it was always meant to be one big volume, and I apologise that readers were not allowed to see the book in the way it was written, with a beginning, a middle and an end. If there is a second volume, you may see this, but one of the reasons I fought so hard for my books to be single volumes is the rather awful practice by American manga publishers, both Seven Seas and Tokyopop, to simple throw out a single volume and then stick out their tongues at the paying public and going nyah nyah nyah on you. I can tell you that all of the book was written, some art was produced, and this is merely an example of it.

But before all of that, obviously, for anyboy who doesn't know where the lyrics are from (slightly altered) ... as if anybody doesn't know Peter Gabriel

INT/THE ASSASSIN SCHOOL/CORRIDOR/EXIT/DAY

… and BACK to LILY who LOOKS OUT OF THE DOORWAY from the INSIDE, with only MADAME ICHI between her and the REST OF THE WORLD.

MADAME ICHI
I won’t stop you … you can go wherever you want.
PRODUCTION NOTE

Throughout the next sequence, I want us to show a PASSING of time, according to the MUSICAL LYRICS and the BREAKING DAWN… that means that we START in the early MORNING HOURS… and throughout the scene, the SUN IS RISING, and it TOUCHES the two people in the car, and it touches the landscape, and the SUN comes FULLY through the clouds when we REVEAL where they are driving to, at the end of it.

… and to an IMAGE of a RENTAL CAR on a SCOTTISH HIGHWAY. This is an image I have provided for you, please use it, and please in such a way that we can SEE the SIGN to the LEFT of the image (the one stating how many miles to Edinburgh and the other cities), and underneath that, we have a

… and then FROM THE RENTAL CAR (only AFTER we have read both the SIGN and the LOCATION CAPTION, so position the care way up front in the panel, please, with his rear towards us), we have…

… of all the places we could be hiding, love?

… and to BERNIE at the DRIVING WHEEL (PLEASE NOTE! WE ARE IN THE UK NOW. DRIVING WHEELS ARE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, CARS DRIVE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE) in the FOREGROUND of the SHOT, and with CRYSTAL on the PASSENGER SEAT, her HEAD against the PASSENGER WINDOW, her EYES CLOSED… and ASLEEP, the way you can barely FALL asleep inside a car…

From the CAR RADIO, we get…

… for a SHOT of the RENTAL CAR traveling along one of the SERPENTINE STREETS in the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS, from VERY, VERY FAR AWAY, to give us a SCOPE and BREADTH of the LANDSCAPE they are in…

RADIO MUSIC (WITH SOME NOTES FLOATING, TO INDICATE MUSIC)
When there was love all in the air?

INT/SCOTLAND/RENTAL CAR/DAY

… and IN THE CAR, here’s the SCENE that we are going to do, and it should be SWEET and LOVING and WITHOUT WORDS, with the only thing to read coming from the RADIO as “song”…

… The SLEEPING CRYSTAL MOVES her HEAD AROUND, away from the WINDOW and…

… INSTINCTIVELY, and without FEAR or SHAME or SORROW, secure in her SLEEP as only somebody who is REALLY IN LOVE can be, she LEANS her SLEEPING HEAD against BERNIE’S SHOULDER…

… and he LOOKS DOWN ON HER…

… NO FEAR…

… and she CUDDLES her CHEEKS into him, like a CAT having found the right place…

… and BERNIE puts his ARM AROUND her as she sleeps…

…with the other one HOLDING the STEERING WHEEL…

… and he KISSES the SLEEPY GIRL…, just GENTLY enough, on her FOREHEAD…

… and she SMILES, if but a little…

… as we PLACE the FOLLOWING LINES from the RADIO at the appropriate moments of the scene…

… to a GIANT PANEL that has the RENTAL CAR almost disappear in its GRANDIOSE NATURAL BEAUTY, this is the KIND OF HELICOPTER TYPE SHOT in a movie as the RENTAL drives up through the HIGHLANDS…

… and towards a CASTLE.

THE CASTLE. The one we have only seen so far in the CHIBI FLASHBACKS, where we with full purpose only showed it as a funny version, because IN REALITY, it is BEAUTIFUL, and it is OLD and it is MASSIVE…
